So, this was in celebration of my 35th birthday party.  Big night for me and my 6 friends that joined my wife and I.  I got a room at the Sofitel, babysitter for the little one, looking for a great meal to cap off the night.  The potential was there, it was a nice night for a hearty meal at one of the premier steakhouses in Philadelphia.

The evening started off well, with a nice cocktail as we waited for the rest of the guests to arrive.  We were promptly seated and given menus and some specials.  The hard sell for appetizers began.  The overprices stone crab legs were first.  Then, the seafood platter for the table to share was next.  Both were declined.

Drink orders and food orders were taken.  As the birthday boy, I was last to have my order taken.  After I ordered my steak and side items for the able (I was asked to do this), the waiter then said “Would you like a lobster for the table?”  It took a second to process, looked at him and said, “Did someone order that?”  He said, “No, I just thought you would enjoy it.”  Yes, I would also enjoy not spending $300 for my meal.  I passed on the lobster for the table.  Ugh!

Meals arrive promptly and we dug in to taste these prime delicacies.  I ordered my medium, which it was, barely.  Closer to medium well.  Same with my wife’s.  My friend ordered a filet medium rare, it to was medium well.  We called the waiter back to confirm his order, which was medium.  The steak was sent back.  My other friend that ordered tuna medium rare also sent her’s back, it was medium-well.  The steaks were almost all overdone, over seasons (very salty) and just plane old not great.

The side items, now they were pretty darn good.  We ordered a host of the side items and I am glad we did, because they kicked ass.  The lobster mac & cheese was my personal favorite and I think it was the winner at our table as well.

When the bill came, there was a soup on our bill that never arrived, it was removed from the tab.  Why it never arrived, we have no idea.

So, it was a good night with some great friends.  The restaurant is beautiful and might be worth a stop in for a $8 beer.  Next time, I’ll stick to my ongoing favorite for steak joints, Sullivan’s.  Strange, Sullivan’s is the low-end brand from Del Friscos…yet they make a better steak.  Go figure!
